A side-by-side comparison

Why build with Precision?

A custom home is a 12–16 month relationship — not a transaction. Here is how our process, our team, and our standards compare to the way most builders run a job.

How Precision compares to other builders — category by category.

Precision Homes Other Builders 17 questions every homeowner should ask before breaking ground.
01
Organization

A team built for the volume of information a custom home generates.

Precision Homes

Building a custom home requires an organization that can handle the huge amount of information that goes in and out of the office — and be on jobsites frequently enough to oversee construction adequately. Our team of four covers it all — two in the office, two in the field.

Other Builders

Many builders try to handle everything — construction, quality, selections, accounting — by themselves. You will quickly find slow construction, quality problems, bad communication, and disappointment.

02
Communication

We answer the phone. Every time.

Precision Homes

We have a team member in our office 100% of the time to answer your questions. If she can’t answer your question, she will get an answer to you quickly.

Other Builders

Many builders aren’t available — they’re on the phone, on a site without cell coverage, or surrounded by jobsite noise. It becomes frustrating quickly.

03
Education

An engineer’s degree behind every decision.

Precision Homes

Dan, the owner of Precision Homes, holds an Engineering degree from Brigham Young University.

Other Builders

Many builders don’t have higher education. Of those who do, very few hold a degree closely related to their field.

04
Experience

Custom homes. Nothing else.

Precision Homes

We are only in the business of building custom homes — nothing else. We have built over 250 custom homes to date.

Other Builders

Many builders also do spec homes, remodels, commercial work, and small jobs like decks and driveways. They don’t specialize in custom homes.

05
Design

Designed to fit your land — and the way we actually build.

Precision Homes

Because we design and build your house, it is designed both to fit your site and to fit the way we actually build custom homes.

Other Builders

Most builders don’t offer in-house design. They send you to a website, designer, or architect who likely won’t visit your site — which often means design changes and added costs.

06
Interior Design

An in-house Interior Designer for your selections.

Precision Homes

One of our team members has an Interior Design degree and can help you with all of your selections — a huge benefit for most homeowners who need help in this area.

Other Builders

Most builders will give you their opinion but don’t offer much help in this area.

07
House Plans

Plans drawn the way we build, checked over 200 ways.

Precision Homes

Our house plans are designed exactly the way we build — what you see is what you get. Every plan goes through over 200 internal checks so subcontractors know exactly how to build each house.

Other Builders

Many plans are very basic and lack the detail needed for clear communication with the customer and the subs. That leaves room for surprises and miscommunication.

08
Specifications

Clear specs. No surprises.

Precision Homes

Our specifications are clear and easy to understand. You will know what you are getting in every phase of construction — and just as importantly, what you are not getting. Our specs reduce surprises during construction.

Other Builders

Many builders rely on the house plans for their specs, or use a simple one- or two-page set. That leaves the door open for unwanted surprises during construction.

09
Expectations

A four-page summary, signed as part of your contract.

Precision Homes

Dan goes over what to expect when building a custom home with you, and has put together a four-page summary that becomes part of your contract.

Other Builders

Most builders don’t address this at all.

10
Project Management

A project engineer’s discipline, on every job.

Precision Homes

Dan’s background is project management. After more than 10 years as a project engineer, he uses real project-management tools to keep our jobs organized and on schedule.

Other Builders

Many builders have experience building, but lack good project management on the jobsite.

11
Scheduling

Construction scheduling software keeps subs in lockstep.

Precision Homes

We take scheduling seriously. We use construction scheduling software to coordinate every subcontractor — which reduces delays and hiccups on the job.

Other Builders

Very rarely use scheduling software at all.

12
Subcontractors

One trusted sub per phase. Not the cheapest bid.

Precision Homes

We have one subcontractor we trust for each phase of construction. They are the best we can find, will take care of any issues we identify, and warrant their work.

Other Builders

Many builders bid out jobs to the cheapest subs to save money. That’s bad practice — and it leads to problems during construction and after the warranty expires.

13
Engineering

Engineered or engineer-inspected — every structural element.

Precision Homes

All of our floor trusses, roof trusses, beams, footers, concrete walls, and slabs are either engineered or inspected by an engineer. We want no structural issues in our homes.

Other Builders

Many builders don’t use engineers, and rely on the county or city inspector to catch any structural problems.

14
Quality Control

3,000+ checks per home, by a dedicated team member.

Precision Homes

We have a quality-control system integrated into our construction process. Our site superintendents inspect every house with over 3,000 quality control checks, to ensure each home is built to our high standard.

Other Builders

Most builders rely on the homeowner or the county to find problems and defects. That is not an effective quality-control method.

15
Construction

A continuously-improving process, refined over 250 homes.

Precision Homes

We’ve identified many areas of the construction process where we’ve made improvements — designed to reduce call-backs, punchout, and warranty work. After 250+ custom homes, we’ve built a process that is second to none.

Other Builders

Other builders very rarely have a system to continually improve on every house, reduce punchout and warranty, or increase customer satisfaction.

16
Warranty

30-day adjustment, 11-month walkthrough — answered immediately.

Precision Homes

When there is an issue, you can submit it through our website. We offer a 30-day adjustment after move-in, respond immediately to emergencies, and at 11 months we schedule your warranty items right away. Every estimate includes an extended 2-10 Warranty.

Other Builders

This is usually a weak area for other builders. Many times warranty items are dragged out for months after the warranty period ends — if they are addressed at all.

17
